The good, the better & the best

THE GOOD: PRESSURE TREATED WOOD

Easily the most common selection to to cost, pressure treated wood is the type framing choice. Obviously this would be the only realistic choice for a deck whose boards and handrails are also pressure treated wood, but we also often use it to frame up PVC or Brazilian hardwood decks that have metal handrail systems.

“Why would you use a material that decomposes as the frame for boards and handrails that wont?” Great question!

The honest answer is: we prefer not to; however because it’s a lot more affordable than more durable materials, it often makes financial sense to use it and protect it from the elements and bugs before we attach boards and handrails.

We waterproof the top surfaces of all our pressure treated wood frames with butyl tape designed specifically for this purpose in order to ensure no water soaks into it. This prevents most rot before it can ever start.

Furthermore, we use vinyl wraps on posts (specific to PVC & hardwood deck options) by default to ensure rain, sun and bugs don’t affect them. Vinyl-wrapped posts also elevate the aesthetic finish of a deck, making it look a lot more intentional, perfect and high-end by hiding the pressure treated wood and all its imperfections.

Going a step further by adding an under-deck drainage system hides and protects the rest of the frame for a totally flawless PVC or hardwood deck that has a secretly affordable and well protected frame.

THE BETTER: OWENS-CORNING® COMPOSITE

With some HUGE advantages over pressure-treated wood, and with a minimal price difference, Weardeck™ Advantex® Fiberglas™ framing by Owens-Corning™ (yeah, the roofing manufacturer), has some serious benefits worth entertaining.

Because this material isn’t made of wood, it won’t be bothered by ground moisture or even bodies of water (it’s often used to build docks). It doesn’t swell and warp like wood, and won’t get eaten by carpenter bees and ants. it’s almost 3x stronger than wood, and will last eons longer without warping or needing any sort of maintenance.

Because it’s not vulnerable to the elements, weight, gravity, or insects like wood is, and doesn’t need to be protected or covered, it really is a near perfect framing material. As such, your money if far better spent in the long term on a frame like this versus wood, and will ensure a deck that lasts ages when paired with PVC deck boards and vinyl+metal handrails.

Unlike other traditional materials, WEARDECK™ is a GLAS POWERED™ composite lumber (Fiberglas™ reinforced High-Density Polyethylene) that delivers strength and durability from the inside out. Its enhanced wood-free design is reinforced with Owens Corning proprietary Advantex® Fiberglas™ technology. This powerful glass fiber ensures that WEARDECK™ holds up exceptionally well under high live loads — with durability that lasts a lifetime.
